Volunteers at AIDS Project Los Angeles, who range in age from 12 to 86, increase our capacity to serve the community ten times over. People of many skills and backgrounds come through our doors every year, as teams or as individuals, for assignments from phone banking to bagging groceries to leading therapy sessions. Each year, APLA benefits from the work of 1,500 volunteers who contribute more than 65,000 hours of service annually at a value of $1.1 million per year. Below you will find opportunities for volunteering at APLA.

We are now accepting applications for the following volunteer opportunities:


AIDS Walk

DIVISION: Client Services

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteer position will participate with the annual AIDS Walk.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Volunteers needed to register as part of Team APLA as walkers as well as volunteers needed to help the day of the event.

Client Access Volunteer

DIVISION: Client Services

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

A volunteer opportunity to assist the Client Contact Program and Clientline by helping case manage APLA's self-sufficient clients by assessing client situations, providing up-to-date information and referrals by telephone and updating client records; assist in maintaining current resource library.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, data entry and knowledge of active listening.
  • Strong PC, MS Office, and Internet skills.

Dental Treatment Volunteers

DIVISION: Client Services

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

At APLA’s Raymond E. Greene/Ronald LeBaron Dental Treatment Center, Professional volunteers can become involved in a number of ways as Dentists, Dental Hygienists, and Dental Assistants.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Professional volunteers – Dentists, Dental Hygienists, and Dental Assistants.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Food Bank/ Food Drive Volunteer

DIVISION: Client Services

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Necessities of Life Program (NOLP) provides groceries to over 1,700 clients that are on a limited income. Clients are able to access the food bank once a week, four times per month and take home three to four bags of groceries per visit. They receive a wide variety of predetermined items. NOLP is one of the largest direct client contact programs here at APLA, NOLP has a number of opportunities for volunteers such as distributing groceries to clients, pre-bagging groceries, filing and stocking shelves.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • The desire to help improve the quality of life of low-income people with HIV.
  • Enjoy working in a warehouse environment.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Outgoing personality, excellent communication skills.
  • Bilingual Spanish helpful as well as some knowledge of HIV/AIDS.

Nutrition/Administrative Volunteer

DIVISION: NOLP/Nutrition

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteer position will interface with the Nutritionist and Site Assistant in order to successfully offer administrative assistance to clients, volunteers and staff.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, filing, data entry, phone skills.
  • Strong PC, MS Office, and Internet skills.
  • Strong Nutrition and administrative skills needed.

Office Services Volunteer

DIVISION: Human Resources

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Office Services member assist various APLA departments in the day-to-day handling of additional administrative/clerical work. Projects may involve photocopying, mailings, filing, data-entry, and phone banking to name but a few. Volunteers are accepted at all skill levels and with shifts available between the hours of 10-4 pm, Monday through Friday.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, filing, distribution, and proofreading.
  • Strong PC, MS Office, and Internet skills.

Outreach Volunteers

DIVISION: Human Resources

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteers needed to assist, monitor and organize outreach activities at local venues. Shifts vary between day, night and weekends, on an as needed basis.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Outgoing personality, excellent communication skills.
  • Bilingual Spanish helpful as well as some knowledge of HIV/AIDS.

Pacific Center Volunteer

DIVISION: Client Services

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Pacific Center Program matches volunteer licensed mental health professionals with clients of APLA for psychotherapy. There is no fee to the client. Clients are seen by the therapist in his/her private practice office.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Available to Licensed mental health professionals only.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Special Events Volunteer

DIVISION: Volunteer Resources

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with set-up, breakdown, directional, ticket sales and other duties related to our special events.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Volunteers should be flexible and willing to perform a variety of duties.
  • Groups are encouraged.
  • Excellent people skills as required.
  • A variety of shifts is available.
  • We need both daytime and nighttime volunteers for most events.

A partial list of upcoming volunteer events:

  • Oscar Event: Sunday, February 27, 4:00 p.m.
    • Volunteers needed to assist with annual fundraising event.
    • Volunteers must be 21 years of age
    • Time Varies generally between 3:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
  • LA Marathon: Sunday, March 20, 2011
    • Volunteers needed to support runners at Mile 15. Hand out water, snacks and support the runners. Excellent for groups and young adults.
      • Three shifts available:
        • 5:00am-9:00am
        • 9:00am-12:00pm
        • 11:00am-2:30pm
  • S.T.A.G.E.: Saturday, April 4, 2011
    • Annual Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event (S.T.A.G.E.) Show
    • Volunteers needed for set up, silent auction, monitors, breakdown
    • Shifts available throughout the day and evening. Excellent for groups.
      • Set up from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
      • Silent Auction from 4:15 p.m. to 1:15 a.m.
      • Monitors, Directionals  and other duties as needed.
  • FID National Volunteer Week Event: Saturday, April 16, 2011
    • Location to be announced
    • Annual Volunteer recognition Event
    • Greeters, servers, etc.
  •  Art Project Los Angeles: Friday, June 24 – Sunday, June 26, 2011
    • Volunteers needed to assist with pre and post event
    • Volunteers also needed Monday through Friday prior to event
    • Volunteers needed Friday and Saturday for Event
    • Volunteers needed Sunday for Wrapping and Breakdown
  • Host an On-Site Food, Toiletry , or Toy Drive at your school or business (on-going)
    • We need individuals to host one time or on-going food and toiletry drives
    • We need individuals or groups to host seasonal toy drives
    • Collect food and toiletries to support APLA
  • Volunteer Audience Members (Times and dates vary)
    • We are looking for groups of 12 or more who are willing to attend television screenings for various shows. Shows are subject to availability and some have age requirements.

Team to End AIDS Marathon Support Volunteer

DIVISION: Development

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist with runner support at our training site.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Volunteers should be flexible and willing to perform a variety of duties. In the parks Volunteers will be asked to cheer, point, pour water… and sometimes cut oranges or make peanut butter sandwiches.  It’s surprisingly fun and very easy.
    • Groups are encouraged.
    • Excellent people skills as required.
    • Shifts are generally from 6:45 AM to 1:00 PM.
    • It’s important that Volunteers are able to drive to different parts of the course. 
      • Carpooling is encouraged.
    • Contact us for a list of all of our available dates.
    • Location needs:
      • Saturday and Sundays at Griffith Park starting 6:45 AM to 1:00 PM
      • Times may vary by dates.
