Intern Job description
Position Purpose:
To learn and develop skills in behavioral
intervention models applied to HIV prevention: adopting, adapting,
implementing, evaluating programs. In
addition to research and evaluation as it applies to HIV/AIDS services,
policy, health education, and health promotion. The Internship
is to provide assistance to Acción Mutua (capacity building
assistance program) in enhancing community based organizations and
health departments’ technical capacity to implement and sustain
effective HIV behavioral interventions in the Western region of USA. Interns
may perform some of the following duties depending upon the intern’s
interest and program needs: conducting needs assessments, providing
technical assistance, assisting trainers, conducting formative research
on HIV behavioral interventions, enter and manage data, write evaluation
reports, and provide other Accion Mutua support as needed.
Requirements:
Background in Public Health, Public
Policy, Psychology, Sociology, or related field is preferred. Must possess willingness to learn
research/evaluation and consulting skills necessary for applied social,
behavioral and public policy arena. Intern must also have interest
in addressing HIV/AIDS prevention issues for Latinos. Must possess
skills in using Microsoft Word/Excel. Must commit for a minimum
of 3 months, 10-12 hours a week. Required to complete Internship
Agreement form; submit scope of work; attend weekly meeting; develop
research project; and present findings to staff. Prior to
starting internship, intern must attend a New Volunteer Orientation,
scheduled through Volunteer Resources.

COMMUNICATIONS INTERN
DEPARTMENT: Communications
OBJECTIVE:
Assist the Communications Department with advertising, marketing, media relations and branding activities as well as the production of its print and online publications. This is an ideal internship for the candidate who seeks both a range and depth of professional experience. This is a full-time internship with cash stipend.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The communications intern will:
- Work directly with the Communications Manager to create and produce upcoming communications and public relations plans and materials.
- Assist in media outreach and planning activities for AIDS Walk Los Angeles and other smaller-scale events.
- Create content for the agency Web site.
- Create content for the agency’s online and print communications.
- Work closely with out-of-house graphics vendor to develop collateral / marketing materials for APLA programs and services.
OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED TO MEET BUSINESS NEEDS.
REQUIREMENTS:
Training and Experience:
Current enrollment in a communications or marketing-related degree program. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Mastery of standard written English including accurate grammar and spelling. Willingness to work 40 hours per week through October, 2010. Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism. Exceptional flexibility and ability to multi-task. Strong PC, MS Office, and Internet skills. Desire to pursue a professional career in communications. While previous knowledge of HIV/AIDS issues is desirable, it is not required.
Ability to:
Write clearly, concisely and persuasively; develop and adhere to project timelines; manage multiple projects simultaneously; communicate effectively and professionally with clients, staff, donors and media contacts.

Community Based Research (CBR) Intern
DIVISION: Education
SALARY: College credit only
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
To assist the Community Based Researcher and Study Coordinators in the completion of quantitative research and/or evaluation of HIV/AIDS related issues, services, policy, health education and health promotion. May include recruitment of participants, contacting participants for follow-up interviews, conducting literature searches, and administering surveys related to sexual behavior, substance use, or HIV medication adherence. Requires some experience or knowledge in research or evaluation methods, and comfort working with gay/bisexual, HIV positive, and ethnic minority individuals.
REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong PC, MS Office, and Internet skills
- Commit to a minimum 10-12 hour weekly work schedule for a minimum of 3 months
- Complete and submit an Internship Contract form and scope of work
- Provide support to CBR staff (e.g. conducting literature searches, managing databases, designing and pilot-testing survey instruments, recruiting, tracking and interviewing participants, and developing reports)
- Meet weekly with CBR Internship Coordinator and submit progress reports

HOPWA Mental Health Intern
DEPARTMENT: Residential Client Services
OBJECTIVE:
Assist the Residential/HOPWA Mental Health Specialist with new client intakes, client file organization, client file upkeep and streamlining of confidential mental health materials.

Current enrollment in a bachelor’s level social work or psychology program, or 6 month minimum volunteer experience with a community based mental health provider. Express desire to work within mental health programs. Outstanding empathy, written and verbal communication skills. Willingness to work minimum of 10 hours per week for the duration of the academic semester. Basic advocacy skills. Ability to utilize analysis, experience, and judgment to make decisions. Interest in mental health, HIV/AIDS issues of local, national and global scope.
Ability to:
Empathize and build rapport with others. Willingness to learn basic crisis intervention, documentation, and multicultural and socio-economic issues. Special Events Intern (1 position)
DIVISION: Development
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Special Events Intern will
work with the Senior Development Officer, Events and Development
Associate, Events in planning
and executing APLA’s “The Envelope Please” Oscar® Viewing
party, an annual fundraising event in West Hollywood. Potential
responsibilities include: assisting in the coordination of pre-event
planning; organizing and printing promotional materials; assisting
in ticket processing; contacting guests and vendors to provide
event information; answering event-related phone calls and questions;
assisting on-site during the day/evening of the event; and performing
other duties as needed. More information on the event can be found
under the Special Events heading at www.apla.org.
REQUIREMENTS:
Candidate must be willing to work approximately 20 hours per
week during January, 2006 (if available) and during February /
March, 2006 and must be available to work the evening / late night
of the event, Sunday, March 5, 2006. Also required are excellent
written and verbal communication skills; Strong PC, MS Word/Excel,
and Internet skills; interest in HIV/AIDS issues; and ability
to work well under pressure. Background in customer service desirable.
